Revisado y bautizado de nuevo en 1982 como NCLEX-RN, se trata de un examen preparado por el National Council of State Boards of Nursing de EE.UU. para comprobar la competencia de una persona para ejercer con seguridad su labor de enfermera titulada recién licenciada. Cada jurisdicción en Estados Unidos y sus territorios regula la entrada en la práctica de la enfermería; cada uno de ellos exige al candidato la superación del examen. El contenido del examen está pensado para probar los conocimientos del candidato sobre el proceso de la enfermería, aplicado a las amplias áreas de la práctica de la enfermería, incluyendo la salud maternoinfantil, la enfermería médica y quirúrgica y la enfermería psiquiátrica.
